Others make the point that the US is the modern day Goliath, and less powerful nations of the third world are the Davids. I don't think such one-to-one identifications help to clarify either the biblical text or our contemporary situation. In any case, what the biblical text does NOT do is set up a confrontation between the "good guys and the bad guys," inviting speculation as to which nations or groups in today's world are "good" and which are "evil." For remember, David, for all his appeal as a youthful psalmist and fighter, ended up becoming a murderer and a king whose abuse of power was massive. There, but by the grace of God, goes anyone who thinks that he/she, or one's nation, one's political party, or even one's church represents the will of a righteous God with the authority to kill on God's behalf. | |
