66 opens with these words: "Thus says the LORD: 'Heaven is my throne
and the earth is my footstool.'" Of course, it might be worth stopping
at this point to consider to what extent words like "heaven," "throne,"
or "footstool" are literal. Do such passages imply that there is an
actual throne upon which God sits? Or do such images call for a stretching of
the imagination to discover what attributes of God are being suggested here? I
happen to think there is more to be gained by looking beyond the literal meanings
of such words, reaching for the deeper truths.
